Beyond Two Weeks: Debunking Myths and Realities of Paternity Leave

I was at a gathering that was a mix of older and younger men. The older group was wondering what to do with the Paternity Leave. What do they do at home? Listen to crying babies and the nagging of a wife. They never had it.

The younger ones looked on in shock. They have been changing diapers and have become adept at warming milk for the baby during the joyful season, though it remains to be seen if there is more joy or earache for them.

Do men need to go on paternity leave? Or Do fathers need to go on Paternity leave? Do fathers utilise their leave as is envisioned?

The older group would celebrate the baby’s birth at the bar with their friends, utilising their free leave. In contrast, the younger ones are now seen in the hospital halls biting their nails, panicking and scrolling through their phones, not seeing the screen really, waiting for the baby to arrive. They need to hold the baby immediately after the baby comes along.

The brave ones are usually in the labour ward, where the action is holding their wives’ hands, wiping sweat off their brows, making them comfortable as if there is comfort in that harrowing moment, reminding them to breathe.

In any case, I digress from my point.

It was also argued whether the Paternity leave was for bonding with the baby or the wife or becoming her manservant during the leave. Whichever you think it is, it is meant for the family to bond during this vulnerable time.

Any man is entitled to 2 weeks of Paternity leave upon the birth of their bouncing, toothy, grinning baby. One can take two weeks’ leave simultaneously or as the employee and employer agreed upon.

I know we have those of us who have several wives. After all, we live in a polygamous society; it might be an excellent plan to have several pregnancies lined up so you may enjoy a bit more leave.

This is not a good idea; you have two weeks to utilise in one year. Use your discretion when you are planning on populating the earth. Your employer is only obliged to give you up to two weeks yearly.

Whatever reason you wish to enjoy your paternity leave, Plan accordingly.
